To The North Cape

After a rather buggy night and a slow start, we left Cabot Beach Provincial Park and started off to the North Cape…which is at the western end on the island. I suppose it is called the North Cape because it is at the north end of the west end.

PEI is a rather concave shape and the top points at each end are about the same latitude, but the cape at the east end is called East Point.

The North Cape has a wind energy research facility and an interpretive center for visitors. It also has a small wind farm with a number of different wind turbines.

Onward…

Our first stop in the town of Kensington wasn’t far from the park…the Willow Bakery and Cafe. A great spot for breakfast. They had five varieties of scones, six types of muffins, many other pastries and coffee…served in real cups. Ellen and I had a Blueberry scone and Bob & Beth had a Strawberry-rhubarb scone. We all had coffee.

After picking up a half dozen butter tarts to have for dessert tonight, we continued our journey to the North Cape. It was a pleasant drive along the north shore and we arrived at the cape just in time for lunch. The restaurant at the interpretive center was closed for 2023, so it was sandwiches in Speedy for us.

We had heard it was a good place to boondock and found a turnout along a cliff side road. It was big and flat and looked out over the entrance to Northumberland Strait directly to the west.

We settled the vans and Ellen and Beth went off birding. Bob and I set out chairs and I set up our litte spotting scope and looked at the seabirds on and above the water offshore.

The ladies returned and we all relaxed and did a bit of stationary birding.

It was a warm and breezy afternoon.

Dinner was outdoors in the shade of the Revel. Pasta alla Norma for us.

After dinner we walked around to the other side of the point and as we were returning spotted a pair of foxes strutting across the parking lot and into the interior of a long wind turbine blade that was lying on the ground as an exhibit. Nothing like a 100 foot long den.

We were hoping for a nice sunset, but it set onto clouds to the west, so no green flash…or even the sight of the sun disappearing over the horizon. It is forecast to be fair night with light winds.

Tomorrow we will part ways with Bob and Beth as they head home and we continue on to Nova Scotia on the way to Labrador.
