A Gray Voyage

After a night of little sleep we awoke to stronger rain than last evening. I had to turn the propane back on for our morning coffee with Mom’s Oat Scones. These are a local item and bear little resemblance to what one normally thinks is a scone. They are more like a big oat shortbread square…but they are mighty tasty.

We then settled in to watch the ferry arrive and wait until we could board.

After a mid-morning coffee and more oat scones, I shut the propane off as required for the ferry because we were certainly getting on this time.

We did and the ferry left on time in the rain and wind. You could feel a change in motion when we came out off the protection of the harbor, but the ship is so large that it made little difference. We just read and dozed for the next 6+ hours. It was too windy andrainy to go out on deck, so no pelagic birding today.

When we arrived Port aux Basques it was raining even harder and we hotfooted it to JT Cheeseman Provincial Park about 5km away. We stayed there on our last trip to Newfoundland as well. They had available unserviced sites and we were given an unserviced site by the river…which is currently raging away in all the rain. It empties into the bay just downstream from our site, so we expect that we will have no worries.

We will only be here for overnight then off to Corner Brook and Gros Morne NP tomorrow.

Now it is time to sleep.
