It was a smoky start to the day as the haze and smoky odor from the wildfire across the sound continued. We both woke up coughing.
We had coffee and breakfast relatively early. Ellen had found some ripe local strawberries a couple of days ago and we had been having them for dessert, but today they became part of breakfast. Strawberries, muesli and milk for Ellen and strawberries, muesli, maple syrup and yogurt for me. It was a tasty change from my usual muffin or bread and probably healthier.
After our showers, we were off to our next stop, Dildo Run Provincial Park on the road to Twillingate. We stopped only long enough to find a campsite and check in, as they only had four left and then went off to the Sansome and Sons Lobster Pool and restaurant. We had eaten there on our first trip to Newfoundland and they have the best seafood chowder. Since it contains lobster, shrimp and crab, along with mussels, cod and scallops, Ellen could not partake but had a good cod sandwich. We finished off with fried calamari and for Ellen an Iceberg beer.
After that it was off to Twillingate. I remembered it as sort of laid back, but it is now a rather busy town with lots of traffic, holiday rentals and stores. We wanted to stop at the Wooden Boat Museum once again, where they have not only exhibits of boats and boatbuilding, but also have a workshop where they build a new small boat each year from traditional designs. This year it was a punt that they had just finished.
They then raffle it off. I bought my $5 ticket (which will be a winner, of course). They will deliver it to anywhere on Newfoundland. I guess we will have delivered to the ferry at Channel-Port aux Basques and come back to pick it up. All we have to do is win the lottery ...
It was time to brave the traffic and return to Dildo Run PP. On the road back we must have passed a dozen camper vans going the other way and we had seen several in the town. After a bit of research when we got settled, I think that they were all going to Crow Head at Long Point where there is a large parking area near the lighthouse and a Sea Breeze Park just below it. It seems to be an extremely popular boondocking spot. The photos on iOverlander show over a dozen campers parked there. It is almost as crowded as an RV park. We prefer places that are a bit quieter like the Green Point light from the other night.
When we got back to Dildo Run we found out that our site was an unserviced site which was unexpected. We thought we'd taken an electric site. It turned out that all the sites starting at the next one to ours were electric but not ours. The available sites were mostly in deep woods and it was very hot. We went back to the gate to see if we could swap and there was just one left. It is up a slope, but flat on top and fairly open and we are now relaxing in air-conditioned comfort.
Tomorrow it is off to Fogo Island, a new place for us.
