The day started out with another colorful sunrise, this time over Santa Rosa Lake. We ran into our first shower around Carrizozo, the second was a thunderstorm at White Sands and the third, and most exciting, was at the first rest area in Arizona.
We had stopped for a stretch and one of Ellen’s 10 minute walks. We could see lightning in the distance, but started our fast paced stroll around the rest area anyway. We hadn’t gotten to end of the walkway when there was a lightning crack right over our heads. It was an even faster paced walk back to Speedy and we got in just before the sky opened. It was definitely the heaviest downpour of the day and we were glad to be sitting in the rest area.
It was all over in less than 10 minutes and were back on the road for the last stretch of the day. We have stopped at the RV park at the Pima County Fairgrounds outside of Tucson. We probably could have made it all the way to the refuge, but we still need to provision for the next week or two. This saves us the 150 mile round trip between the refuge and Tucson. We will have plenty of those over the winter.
