Once again it was back onto I-40 at the crack of dawn. We had the very wide state of Tennessee ahead of us. It was another day of stops only for fuel and coffee and for heavy traffic through Nashville and Knoxville.
We actually managed to dodge the worst of it at Nashville by deciding to take I-440 around the city rather than staying on I-40 through the city. As we returned to I-40, the traffic coming out and going into the city was hopelessly clogged, but we got back onto I-40 just beyond the heavy outbound traffic.
We took I-40 all the way to I-81 and then turned north. It was back onto the familiar road that goes up the west side of the Appalachians. We finally go out of Tennessee by late afternoon (which suddenly got later as we entered the eastern Time Zone west of Knoxville) and into Virginia.
We got off the highway near Wytheville and made our way along a very scenic back road to the Stony Fork Campground in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest. It was only about 6pm when we arrived, but there wasn't much else along the highway within reach before dark. As we made a circuit of the campground loop, we realized that we'd been here before. We cannot remember which trip it was on, but had stopped at this campground on another trip.
I was hoping for shower this evening as they have warm showers here, a rarity at a Forest Service campground, but it started to rain during dinner and that wasn't the kind of shower I was looking for. We'll wait until morning. I don't think that we will quite make it home tomorrow, but we will go as far as we can.
