After turning in our refuge truck and keys to Josh, we were off on the long slog home.
Our first stop was in Green Valley, though, to visit with Craig and Evelyn before getting on the highway. We had breakfast with them (and Paco the Poodle) at their home. It is a very nice house in a nice neighborhood. They even have their own giant Saguaro cactus in their back yard.
After saying our farewells, we headed for the highway. It was basically a drive on I-10 most of the way through Arizona and into New Mexico, then a cut-off road to Hatch from Deming and our evening stop at Percha Dam State Park along the Rio Grande. Yes, it is the same Rio Grande that we birded in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. It starts in the Rio Grande National Forest in Colorado, runs eastward then south into New Mexico, passing through Albuquerque, then south to El Paso, Texas and becomes the US-Mexico border from there to the Gulf of Mexico.
Percha Dam State Park is, as expected, alongside a dam in the river where a canal branches off to bring water to the agricultural areas north of Hatch. It has a nice small campground with electric and water sites and toilets and showers, all for $14 a night. As it was still quite warm, having the electricity for air conditioning was a plus.
