We got an early start today. It was time to make more time eastward. But it was a northerly course to start. We got back on I-25 heading north towards Albuquerque. We passed right by Bosque del Apache and Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuges. They are primarily wintering bird refuges and those birds have already flown north. We turned east onto US 60 for a less traffic-laden drive to Texas. It avoided I-40 in New Mexico and we joined the Interstates just south of Amarillo.
We stopped in Fort Sumner, NM for lunch at the Rodeo Grill. This must be the hot place in town. As we were finishing up our lunch crowds started arriving and by the time we left, the restaurant was filled. The food was pretty good as well. I had a green chile cheeseburger and Ellen a Southwestern club sandwich. We split the crispy hand-cut fries that came with my burger.
After Amarillo, it was I-40 all the way to Sayre, Oklahoma where we stayed at the Sayre City Park. It is a very nice park, with a golf course, pool, tennis courts, ball fields, a rodeo corral and an RV park. The RV park had nice graveled electric sites for a mere $12/night, but it also has horrendous bathrooms. The rest of the park was so well-kept, they were a real disappointment.
