It was another early start. We joined the procession of tractor-trailers heading east on I-40. In places they were so thick that it seemed like there was nothing but trucks on the highway. I-95 has nothing on I-40.
Aside from stops for fuel (and coffee), we drove and drove...all the way through Oklahoma and Arkansas to the Mississippi at Memphis. We got off the highway at West Memphis, thinking we might stop at a Cracker Barrel there, but it was so early that we decided to press on so that we wouldn't get caught in Memphis morning traffic tomorrow.
When we got back on I-40, we promptly ran into a huge traffic jam. It urned out that the section of I-40 that went over the Mississippi was closed completely from where it intersected with I-55. We were stuck in the left lane and forced onto I-55, while all the trucks were exiting top somewhere.
This actually turned out to be fortuitous as there was no traffic on the I-55 bridge over the river and we got off on the other side, drove along the riverside through Memphis (where we noticed that we had just missed the Memphis BBQ competitions by a day...they were still cleaning up ) and got back on the empty I-44 on the Memphis side of the bridge.
We continued out of town to Lakeland, where we had dinner at the Cracker Barrel and spent a quiet, but very hot and humid, night in their parking lot.
