Back To The Yukon
It was very cold overnight, about 25° F when we got up. It took the propane heater about 15 minutes to get Speedy's interior up to a reasonable temperature. Time to continue on. We are going back to the Yukon today...but only for a short stretch as we on our way to Haines, Alaska.
We left the campground fairly early for the slow drive back along the Nabesa Road. The hunters' truck was now at the Caribou Creek trail head, a short distance from the Dead Dog Hill rest area. They must have seen sheep they liked since no one was around when we passed by. It was after 9am when we reached the ranger station at the start of the road. It was open so we stopped to get my final Wrangell-St. Elias passport stamp. I only missed the stamp at Kennecott.
From there it was off to Tok, then onto the Alaskan Highway to the Yukon. We stopped in Tok about noon time for groceries and lunch at Fast Eddies. Harry and I had pretty good burgers. Ellen and Sally had the split pea soup and a half sandwich on croissants. The soup was good, but the croissants were more like hamburger buns than flaky rolls.
The highway south, which was new to us beyond Tetlin Junction ran along the boundary of the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge. It has great views of the mountains and was a great twisty motorcycle road...if it weren't for the many newly patched and gravelly areas and lots of dips. We finally got to the Yukon border, hoping we'd find a better road. We didn't. It was even worse with even more chipseal patches, ongoing road work and lots of potholes and bumps and dips.
About 30 miles in we stopped at Snag Junction Campground, a territorial campground. Once again, the Yukon campgrounds came through. We found two sites overlooking a lake, took advantage of the free firewood, and had dinner outside.
A nice place to spend the night.
