Another Gray Day, Another Glacier
Rain again overnight, more forecast for today. It was so foggy in the morning that we could barely see the cruise ship that came in overnight.
It was time to move on. A quick dump and fill, then a stop at the local Safeway for a bit of food (milk and chips figured prominently in the list).
Our first stop a was Exit Glacier, much different from the Northwestern Glacier that we saw the other day. It terminates on land and has receded about three miles since the beginning of the 20th Century. We hiked up to an overlook that was along side the end of the glacier.
After Exit Glacier it was off to the Kenai peninsula. We hoped to go as far as Cooper Landing, the fishing center of the upper Kenai River. We made an unexpected stop at Tern Lake, just at the intersection of the Seward and Sterling Highways. Sally had spotted swans and wanted to check them out. We saw pair of Trumpeter Swans as well as a group of scaup with three adults and nearly 40 little chicks. There were also loons and Mew Gulls with young on this small shallow lake.
We drove to the outskirts of Cooper Landing and stopped at a smal fly shop before backtracking a bit to the Quartz Creek campground in the Chugach National Forest. It is at the mouth of Quartz Creek where it enters Kenai Lake.
After finding a double site in this nearly full campground, we walked over to the creek and saw a fair number of spawning salmon in the creek. Fishing for salmon is not allowed here, but fishing fot trout and Dolly Vrden is just fine. They feed om salmon eggs, so fishing on the salmon spawning grounds makes sense.
Maybe we will give it try tomorrow.
