Day 78 - Homer

Fogged In, Then Sun Too Late

Harry was off on his Halibut fishing trip this morning. Last night we agreed to get up early and ride with Sally and him down to the docks at the end of the Homer Spit at 5 am. The trip left early. The idea was to leave him off, then do some birding at the end of the spit where one could see passing seabirds and maybe Surfbird or two on the rocks.

We got Harry to the boat in plenty of time, but the birding idea was thwarted by pea soup fog. We couldn't even see the water from the shoreline. We stopped at a local spot for breakfast, hoping it might lighten a bit, but it didn't. We returned to the campground to wait it out.

By afternoon, the fog had lifted, so Ellen and I got out the bikes again and rode out to the end of the spit. They have a nice bike path that goes almost to the end, which is good as the traffic is relentless and the shoulders narrow. We still saw no Surfbirds or seabirds, except a nesting colony of Kittiwakes covering the ferry docks at the very end.

After a stop for coffee, we pedaled back to the campground once again. At least we got some exercise.

Harry returned later as the successful fisherman having caught his limit of two Halibut. He gave us a piece for dinner...actually big enough for two dinners. They also kept out a piece for their dinner and filled their freezer with the rest. We'll have teo meals, but they might be having halibut for the ret of trip.

Dinnrr was grilled halibut and was enjoyed by all.
