Yet another travel day.
Left Tyhee Lake on a good day and drove the Yellowhead Highway all the way to Prince George, the first moderately large city in quite a while.
Stopped only for coffee at Burns Lake and at the Fraser Lake Visitor Center for lunch in Speedy.
Other than that it was just driving through a changed terrain. Mostly the mountains have given way to pine forests and fields. With occasional farms with livestock.
The highway was good, mostly two lane and went through a number of small towns, lots of 100 kph driving punctuated by 50 kph patches.
It was a party cloudy day, but as we got closer to Prince George we noticed a dirty haze. We were beginning to see the effects of the rash of wildfires that have plagued British Columbia this summer.
We arrived in Prince George in the late afternoon, immediately stopping at a Laundromat, this was followed by a round of grocery shopping.
By the time we finished all of that, it was nearly 6pm. The sky had really become very hazy from the smoke and the sun appeared as a dim blood red ball. It was time to get out of town. It was time to go south on Rt. 97,
Originally, we considered an overnight stop at the local Walmart, but it was hot in town, so we opted to move on. Sally had noticed a rest area about 15 miles out along our route. It seemed a good choice for a quiet overnight stop. We pulled into a nice rest area well off the road with picinic tables, flat paved parking and even toilets. Unfortunately, it also had a sign prohibiting camping or overnight parking.
Fifteen miles further along the highway and then four miles down a gravel road was the Chubb Lake Recreation Site free campground provided by the BC Forest Service. That became our next goal. It has only ten primitive sites. About half of them were full when we arrived, but we found a large sharable one near, but not on, the lake and settled in for the night.
Tomorrow we may make it to Abbotsford and the US border....but it seems we may have a couple of forest fires to drive through.
