No Fish For Dinner
We decided to move on today in our search for fish. We were not in much of a hurry, so after breakfast I took my tenkara rod down to the river to give the clear waters of the Chena a try…no luck.
It was off to Red Squirrel Campground, a much smaller one on the shore of a stocked pond. It supposedly had five sites, but wasn’t a campground in the usual sense. The sites were just parking spots in the gravel drive along one side of the pond.
There was no one else there and we set up the vans at one end near a picnic shelter that we could use for our meals.
When we arrived the pond was stocked with ducks, a mixed group of wigeon, scaup and buffleheads were floating about across the pond. This lasted until a grounds crew showed up to mow the grass (and dandelions) between the gravel drive and the shore line. Off went the flock to a quieter place.
We fished a bit, Harry with both a spinning reel and lures and his fly rod, me with the tenkara rod. We both had the same luck—none.
Ellen and Sally did a bit of birding, walking along the drive out to the road and found that there was another pond at the entrance. It was where all the ducks had gone. They joined some Common Goldeneye and a kingfisher who were already there.
Having found no fish in the pond…or the fish in the pond did not find my fly, I walked along the edge to see if there was an extension around the corner. It narrowed pretty quickly, ending at an old beaver dam.
With no fresh fish, Ellen tucked into the larder and came up with dinner, including cheesy cornbread biscuits made in her cast iron skillet. It was an other outdoor dinner on a sunny day.
