Escaping the City
We left the Tanana Valley Campground as early as possible. It rained again overnight and was pretty muddy when we departed. It was definitely a -1 star campground.
Just up the road was Creamer’s Fields and that was our first stop. It is one of the prime birding hotspots in Fairbanks, particularly during migration. Unfortunately, it was now past migration. We did see a small flock of Sandhill Cranes in summer plumage. Some were almost a complete rusty red, supposedly from staining of their feathers. There were also a small flock of Canada Geese, some Tree and Cliff swallows and a few sparrows, but not much more.
With that, it was time to abandon Fairbanks. We decided to work our way up the Chena Hot Springs Road for a few days, staying at state campgrounds in the Chena River State Recreation Area.
Our first stop was the Rosehip Campground. It was just a single loop with a short walk to the Chena River. We found a double site where we could park both vans side-by-side.
Before setting camp, we drove back along the road a short way to the Twin Rivers Outpost. Harry was hoping that it was an outdoor store where we might get some fishing tips and supplies, but alas, it was only a little strip mall with a coffee shop, a laundromat and a hair stylist. We only had the coffee.
After our not-very-successful sojourn, it was back to camp to settle in, start a campfire and have an al fresco dinner.
