Too Many Full Lakes
It was cold and damp this morning and the forecast was for more rain, so we reluctantly (and mistakenly, it turned out) abandoned our lakeside campsites to continue down the road.
We planned on going just a short distance to Quartz lake, another State Recreation Site. This was a stocked lake and maybe there would be some fish to be had. As we arrived, we realized that we had violated the cardinal rule for RV camping—never move on a weekend.
The place was packed. Most of the sites were taken, the ones left were so steep that it would probably be impossible to level the vans and the lake was crawling with powerboats and jet skis.
Let's try the next stocked lake with a campground, Birch Lake. This turned out to be even worse. It was a much smaller lake and the campsites were actually parking spaces next to the boat ramp. All the parking lots were full of trucks and trailers and even the gravel road in had more of the same parked along the side. No room at this inn!
At least the drive along the highway was interesting running along a wide braided river for much of it. We were tempted to stop in a highway pull-out for the night, but we continued on to one more lake with a campground, Harding Lake. This state recreation area was much bigger than the others and, surprisingly, had more space. We were able to find a pair of wooded level sites and pulled in for the evening. Our plans for an easy day and some fishing were shot.
It is a nice campground, but sort of anonymous. Since the campsites are away from the lake, in the woods, it could be anywhere. But it was a place to have a nice dinner outside before the inevitable overnight shower.
