After taking the small ferry across Little Narrows, it was a pleasant drive along route 223 which goes along the east side of the west bay of Bras d’Or Lake. This took us just south of Sydney where we traveled in a bit more traffic up to Glace Bay and the Great Glace Bay Lake Bird Sanctuary where we did a bit of birding. We came up with 12 species, none new, but it was a nice morning by the water. We pressed further on to Schooner Pond, just outside of Donkin, which was supoosedly another good hotspot. We had lunch overlooking the pond and bay, but only saw a few swallows and cormorants, not even worth a list.
From there, it was back across the island to North Sydney and the ferry terminal. We found out that we could pull into their parking lot after about 11:30pm and spend the night. We wandered around town for a bit, but it is pretty small and most waterfront businesses were closed on Sunday. After topping up Speedy’s fuel tank, we made our way to the almost empty parking lot at Indian Beach Park, a town park right on a peninsula across a little inlet from the ferry terminal and spent a quiet and relatively cool afternoon looking out at the water.
As we were cleaning up from dinner, we noticed that the parking lot was filling up and one of the park buildings was opened up and became a stage. It appeared that a concert in park was scheduled for the evening. Out came a country music band...not a very good one...but it attracted quite a crowd. There were about 50 cars parked around us.
The strangest thing was that when the concert started, only three people were sitting out on the grass in front of the stage. Everyone else was sitting in their car, parked facing the stage, with the windows open listening to the music. Ellen said it reminded her of a drive-in theater...but with no in-car speakers.
We will be heading over to the ferry terminal in couple of hours and then it is off to Newfoundland before noon tomorrow.
