But...the campground was already full!
What to do? Have lunch of course. We drove a little further to the town of Rocky Harbor and parked by the town wharf to have our sandwiches and dicuss what to do next. Our original plan was to stop early in Gros Morne today, do a bit of hiking and then continue to Dildo Run Provincial Park tomorrow. We decided to move along and head east and stop when it got a little later.
The drive out of Gros Morne is even more spectacular than the drive north. The road twists and turns and climbs and drops as you run along the coast looking at the water and the cliffs and then climbs inland back to the Trans-Canada. We fueled up at that point and turned east, in the direction of St John’s. It was Ellen’s turn to drive,
Our first thought of a stop was at Springdale, but it was still relatively early, but we stopped at the visitor center on the highway to find an next alternative. We headed for the Fallsview Municipal Park at Bishops Falls, a hydroelectric station. The campsites were not very appealing, up on a hill with trees between them and the river and backing up to the local neighborhood.
Time for one more alternative, the place we were going tomorrow, Dildo Run Provincial Park near Twillingate. It took us a bit longer than expected as we were slowed down following a pickup truck towing a load of wood for about 50 km of the way on a narrow, bumpy, two-lane road, but we arrived at about 6:30 having driven 774 km for the day.
It is a pretty nice park, more wooded than any of the others we’ve stayed at so far. It is right on the water on New World Island, south of the Twillingate Islands. We have an electric site tonight, sort of overlooking the bay and a non-electric one tomorrow with an even better view.
We plan to tour the Twillingate area tomorrow, maybe doing some birding at Crow Head at the top of North Twillingate Island.
