Day 2 - Another Long Travel Day

Finally a break in the weather allowed a cool night’s sleep. We made an early start as we wanted to get to Cape Breton today, a 400 mile drive. The drive itself was pretty uneventful with only stops for fuel and lunch.

Diesel fuel is about CAD $1.26/liter up here, which turns out to be about US $3.60/gallon. That’s only about 35 cents more than at home. I expected a larger difference.

We arrived at the Whycocomagh Co-op market around 2pm. It is the home of Helen’s Bakery.We picked up a couple packages of her Oatcakes (now called Oat Cookies for some reason). They seem to have changed a bit. They used to come in paper bag...with a bit of butter staining the bag, but now they are packed in plastic bags, so they don’t seem as crisp, but they still taste good.

After the market, we made our way to the Whycocomagh Provincial Park and found a nice open campsite, site 22, for the evening. After settling in, it was off for a short trail walk and a bit of casual birding.

It looks like another cool night and we will be off to Sydney tomorrow in preparation for the ferry crossing on Monday.
