It was a pretty uneventful drive from Gadsen to Gautier. Aside from very heavy rush hour traffic going through Birmingham, and a few construction slow sections, it was a pleasant, but long drive to the Gulf Coast. We made two fuel stops and one Rest Area break. Ellen has a new rest area regimen for us, a brisk ten minute walk at each stop as a way to get in some exercise on our long drives.
We arrived at Shepard State Park a bit after mid-day to sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s. It is all green here. We had originally intended to male our first stop the Davis Bayou campground of Gulf Shores National Seashore. I figured that it would not be hard to get onto in early April, I was wrong. I didn’t figure that this week, following Easter, would by Spring Break in the South.
We did get reservations at Davis Bayous for tomorrow for two nights, but our uncarefully planned schedule is already out of kilter...oh well.
The Spring break also affected our next planned destination, Sea Rim State Park in Texas. This is near Sabine Woods and Anhuac NWR, two really good birding spots, but it is full through the weekend. We might end up on the beach.
We did a bit of a walk and some birding here at Shepard SP. We had our first southern birds today, a pair of Brown-headed Nuthatches. We also saw our first Towhees and Carolina Wrens of the year.
It is supposed to cool a bit tonight with the possibility of violent thunderstorms after midnight. It should be cooler tomorrow when we move on to Davis Bayou.
