Another early relatively smooth start for the three hour drive to Donna, Texas and the Victoria Palms RV Resort. It was the start of the "official" South South Bird Club trip to the Rio Grande Valley. We were meeting the other members at the Victoria Palm in Donna, Texas. They were all staying at the Victoria Palms Inn and we were staying at the attached RV resort.
Made a stop at the first H-E-B in Donna for a few groceries. This one was a bit down-scale compared to the others we've shopped at, but we found the essentials. Then got a bit lost finding a bank to get cash for the SSBC birding trip.
Finally, we arrived at the Victoria Palms at about noon to find the registration office closed...evidently until Monday, then open only 9am-4pm, but we will be off birding with the group from 7am to probably 6pm. We have a problem here.
Called the reservation number to find if we had a site assigned as the gate guard would let us in if we knew our site. The one we had was in a corner, not a bad site, but at the other end of the park from the hotel that the rest of the group was staying in. The RV has over 1100 sites. It would be a 10 minute walk to the showers, then back to Speedy then another 10 minute walk to the hotel.
We called the reservation number again. They were able to confirm that we could move to a closer site which showed as available, but we'd have to confirm it with the local office...when?? I will have to call the office on Monday since they are only open 9AM to 4PM and we will be out birding from about 7AM to 6PM.
Since we arrived early in the day, we spent the afternoon cleaning Speedy, doing laundry and taking well-needed showers.
The free WiFi doesn't seem to be working. It took me a while to find someone with the correct password, but could only connect to the access point, not the Internet. No one around. Called a support number I found in the Rec Center, but it was no help.
Not the end of tech problems—Ellen's cell phone just died. Called Google, they are sending a free upgraded replacement to here on by Monday.
The rest of the birders arrived. We got together at 6pm to plan the next today We will be meeting tomorrow at 7am and off to a frenzy of birding on what looks to be a hot day.
As we were heading over to the inn to meet the others, large flocks of Green Parakeets were flying in. They roost in the palm trees that line the road into the RV park. They arrive every day before sunset and leave again after sunrise.
It is in the 80's outside, but we have the A/C on and it will be a cooled night tonight.
