The main reason for traveling so far yesterday was to outrun the weather. All the way through Pennsylvania we saw electronic road signs warning about overnight winter weather and a check online showed snow. We made it all the way to West Virginia hoping to get below the snow line.
We almost made it.
This morning broke cold (36 degrees) and wet with a dusting of snow on the grass. By the time we stopped tonight in Gadsen, Alabama, it was in the 70s and very green. As we continued south today, we could see the vegetation change along the highway. While it was still pretty bare in Martinsburg, it got greener and leafier as we drove south, first a few redbuds, then daffodils at the rest stops. The roadside bushes stated looking leafy and we drove on past blooming forsythia. By the time we got to Gadsen, Spring was here, with green in the tees and very green grass.
It is another Cracker Barrel night.
A couple of coffee notes. Cafe Latte has become so mainstream that even that temple of country cookin’, Cracker Barrel, has. range of lattes available, from good old plain (my favorite) to the rather bizzare Goo Goo latte. Goo Goos are a southern confection made with chocolate, toffee and peanuts, sort of like a chocolate turtle. The only place we’v seen them is Cracker Barrel.
Also, some Pilot/Flying J truck stops now have fresh ground and brewed coffee. They have self-serve super automatic machines, usually used for espresso drinks, programmed to make brewed coffee, probably Americanos, but not noted as such. They have three grinders on top, each woth a different roast and blend and a touch screen where you select your blend and size. Unlike an ordinary super-automatic espresso machine with a single or double espresso and maybe an americano, these have 16, 24 and 32 ounce settings. It is a step up for truckers, though. Maybe espresso is coming.
Tomorrow it is on to the Gulf Coast.
