Day 106 - North Cascades National Park

Too Hot To Trot.

Another hot night with fitful sleeping. It does get into the 60's by morning, but it is still warm in the evenings and the temperature shoots up as soon a the sun rises over the mountains.

We were out early again to get in another walk up what I call the Newhalem Creek Dam access road...the rangers at the visitor center didn't know if it has a name. Today, Sally and Nina joined us, hoping to see the birds we saw yesterday. The walk was just as pleasant as yesterday in the relative cool of the morning, but there weren't as many birds to be found...or should that be: We didn't find as many birds as yesterday. It was pretty warm by the time we got back to Speedy.

People are starting to leave, but more are still coming in hoping a space is available. A young couple came by in Jeep asking where they needed to go to register for the campsite just after Harry and Sally's, which had just emptied. We advised that they park and walk down to the payment kiosk otherwise it might be gone by the time they came back. They took our advice. Sure enough, just after they got parked another camper came along looking for spot.

After lunch, we tested out Speedy's shower again with good success. We were briefly non-sweaty for the afternoon. For once, we weren't particularly concerned about water usage since after we showered we drove down to the dump station to dump our tanks and refill with fresh water.

As I was getting ready to dump the waste tanks, we watched a tiny vole make its way slowly across a patch of hot pavement to reach a puddle by the fresh water fill hose. It seemed to breathe a sigh of relief when it made it into the shade and too the puddle. By the time I was ready to fill with fresh water, it had finished drinking and had disappeared back into the brush. Ellen made sure that I filled the puddle even more before we left the station.

It was another lazy afternoon at the warm campsite, but at least we were clean. As we were getting ready for dinner another young couple pulled into the site next to us and came over to talk. They were very lucky. The previous camper had pulled out only few minutes before, having had enough of the hot woods, I assume. They were from Portland, drove a pop-top Volkswagen Syncro Van camper. They were very friendly and, to us, seemed just what we imagined young Portlanders are like.

Dinner was cooked outside on the grill stove tonight and our refrigerator is getting even worse. I hope we don't end up losing much of our refrigerated food. This happened too many times with old Speedy before we put in the compressor unit.
