Day 4 - Mew Lake to Monocle Lake, Hiawatha NF, Michigan

Today we travel back to the USA.

It was another long travel day. Once again, the prediction was gray and damp...and it was.

Ellen and Sally went off at about 6 am for their obligatory daily birdwalk. It is their daily contribution to eBird. Soon after that we were on the road. Our original thought was to move on to Chutes Provincial Park which was on the way to Sault Ste. Marie and the US border.

We stopped about noon for lunch a bit short of the park and after a quick meal we decided that to press on to the border and back into the USA. It was another three hour drive, but we would probably find a camping spot in Michigan by 6pm at the latest. Being a gray day with occasional drizzle, it was a better day for driving than sitting around in a damp camp.

We reached the US entrance station at about 4:45pm. Harry & Sally got in one line and we got into the other. They cruised on through, but we didn't. After answering all questions about the vegetables we were carrying, we had to get out of Speedy and go into the building while they checked out the van.

We were a bit nervous after watching too many "Border Security" reality shows on Netflix lately and had visions of them pulling everything out of Speedy looking for an errant piece of citrus, but we stood there waiting for about five minutes and were cleared to be on our way.

After filling up with diesel fuel at US prices, we left Sault Ste. Marie and headed to the Lake Superior coast and Hiawatha National Forest, ending up at the Monocle Lake Campground about 25 miles away from the city.

The rain had stopped but it was still chilly and overcast. We found yet another pair of sites overlooking the lake with a great view—this good fortune can't last. Being about 6pm, we settled in for a quick dinner and called it a day.
