Finally, a clear sunny day...and Ellen's birthday.
It was a cold enough night that we needed to turn on the heater this morning. Ellen was up early to go off birding with Sally. They chose the rail trail that runs past the campground at Mew Lake. I, on the other hand, got to watch the sunrise hightlighting the trees across the lake while having my second cafe latte.
After Ellen returned, we took a walk up to the nearby Twin Rivers store and cafe. It was a bit more birding and a four mile round trip walk. By the time we arrived at the store, it was just about noon...time for lunch. We gave the cafe a try, splitting a beef and cheddar panini with fries. It was more like a steak and cheese sub than panini, but the fries were quite good. After a bit of browsing in the store, we picked uo a couple of ice cream cones, which were also quite good. It wasn't exactly the birthday lunch we had in mind, but it was a nice walk in both directions.
It was lot less exciting than Harry and Sally's bike ride. They had opted to ride the rail trail to its East end. On the way back Sally almost ran down a Black Bear. It ran off as Sally slammed on hersquealing brakes. We only saw few birds...
We spent some time in the afternoon planning out next leg. It is a long day to get Sault Ste. Marie and the border, so our first option is to stop overnight at Chutes Provincial Park, which is right on the way and only about a five hour drive. But...we also realized that the upcoming weekend is Memorial Day weekend. It may be prudent to press on a bit further to get to a spot for the weekend. We are hoping to stop at Picture Rocks National Seashore, but the campgrounds there are quite small and are first-come, first-serve, so we might want to try to get there as early as possible. We will know better tomorrow.
After tha exercise, it was time to start a campfire. We were both having sausages, cooked over the fire for dinner. This turned out to be the smokiest fire ever. I'd give it a D in campfire making, maybe even an F. It wasn't all my fault though. We bought a bag of firewood at the campground woodlot yesterday. They must have cut down the trees the day before. Even with lots of kindling, it took forever to get it to burn. Wet wood just doesn't start well. Unfortunately, Speedy was directly downwind, but Ellen was quick about closing it up.
Eventually, the fire got going enough to grill the sausages and we had out first outdoor dinner. It was a brilliant early evening at our lakeside site, although a bit buggy, but the combination of wood smoke and Thermacell bug repellers, kept the gnats away during dinner.
Our after-dinner walk was cut short by the gnats, so we retired early to out respective vans.
