Speedy gets new brakes and we get back on the road.
We left the Surrey RV Park bright and early to make our way to Tires Plus in Minot. The shop opened at 7:30 am and we were there waiting. Even so, it took until 2 pm to get it all sorted. They seemed competent but a little shy about giving waiting customers status updates. However, they did provide home-made cookies that they have baked at a local sheltered workshop. A nice touch.
They were not sure if we needed new rear calipers since a stuck caliper was the cause of the inner rear pad wearing out. The caliper was the only part they were having difficulty finding locally. If they couldn't free the calipers, we might be stuck a bit longer.
But luck was with us. It turned out that the pad clips had rusted to the caliper faces and once removed they were able to free them. We don't know how long Speedy sat before we bought it, but it seemed like it had been a while and the brakes obviously didn't fare well.
By 2 pm we were out of there with four new sets of pads and rotors and a lighter wallet, but not quite as light as we had feared. We also felt much more comfortable about our braking abilities.
Since it was still early enough, we set course for the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park to meet up with Harry and Sally. It was an uneventful drive with only a stop at the local supermarket in New Town, ND, an oil worker's town in the middle of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. The town was a rather strange combination of reservation administrative center and oil boom town.
We pulled into the park at about 5:30 pm and found H&S in the campground with an empty site right next door. Back together again just in time for dinner.
