Another cold night at Shenandoah and the forecast was for a high of 37° for Wednesday, so we decided to move on to lower and warmer climes. We'd originally planned to go from Shenandoah through Pennsylvania and on to New York and then home, but we were leaving sooner than planned and our Pennsylvania route didn't look much warmer. So, it was a change of route and we were off to revisit Assateague National Seashore.
We got off to a leisurely start, leaving about 10AM, for the 250 mile drive to the coast. We left Skyline Drive at Thornton Gap and headed east along the Lee Highway, following it all the way to I-66 near Manassas. It was a pleasant drive through the Virginia countryside until the Interstate and then we were heading to Washington, DC. We took I-495, the Capital Beltway, around the city, in heavy traffic of course, and went out the other side at US-50 past Annapolis, over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and onto the Eastern Shore, where the countryside became rural again. We followed US-50 almost all the way, leaving it at Berlin for the last few miles to the National Seashore, arriving at about 6PM.
We were back on the coast. It was warmer and the ponies were still there. We found a big enough pull-through site to accomodate both Roadtreks and the trailer, started a fire, having picked up firewood on the way in, and had dinner around the fire.
