It was a relatively short traveling day, only 140 miles to Shenandoah National Park. We were headed to Big Meadows campground. This was familiar ground to all of us. We had come to Shenandoah NP last fall with Harry & Sally on their shakedown trip and spent several days there— until it snowed at Great Meadows. We hoped not to repeat that part of the experience.
We left Cave Mountain Lake at around 8:30, taking a slightly different route through the Virginia countryside back to I-81. Our first stop was Charlottesville, a 25 mile detour, but the city has a Whole Foods market. We were in need of provisions and we had all been there before. The store is one of the larger ones we have been to and had all that we needed (and some things that we didn't need, but bought anyway). After an hour of shopping (and spending much more than we'd intended), it was off to Great Meadows.
We had expected it to be relatively easy to find a site, but it was Easter weekend and quite filled up. We found a pull-through site for Speedy and the trailer. After dropping the trailer and bringing Speedy to dump the dirty water tanks, fill the clean water tank and collect firewood, we set up at the campsite. Ellen & Sally took a walk. I didn't.
