Just a short jaunt from Pictou to Cape Breton Island, so it was a pretty quiet day. The Tans-Canada system took us all the way. The highways are mostly two lane, with occasional climbing lanes, more like New Zealand than the US.
After a stop for groceries and some replacement tie-down straps our only delay was waiting at the bascule bridge to Cape Breton Island as a sailboat passed through. Even as a sailor, it always impressed me that boat traffic has precedence of road traffic. A single yacht stopped dozens of cars and trucks.
Our goal was Baddeck, which is pretty central to the island on the route of the Cabot trail and the Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive. There are three private campgrounds and we looked at all of them, before settling on one, right on the Lake. It is a typical open RV park with all the sites in a row--and pricey compared to the provincial parks, but it does mean that we have electricity, water and wireless Internet. Speedy's air conditioner sure felt good in the heat and humidity.
A couple from Quebec pulled into the site just behind us in a small van, towing a 650 V-Strom on a hand-built single bike trailer. They are off to do the entire Cabot Trail, 300km of twisty road in a single day. We are planning of taking two or three days.
The motorcycles will be out again tomorrow.
