We headed along the Sunshine Trail, the scenic route paralleling the Northumberland Strait. It was a very scenic ride, compared to the Fundy drive, even the bit of gravel road (a detour around a bridge that was being rebuilt). And there was the bear…
We had just gone through the center of Tatamagouche when we saw a black animal ahead next to the road. At first we thought it was a fog, but when we got closer, it was a black bear cub crossing the road just in front of us. The mother was nowhere to be seen.
We had a running joke when we were out West in the spring out seeing a bear. Everywhere we went, there were signs posted that we were in bear country and should keep our food secure. We kept looking, but never saw a bear. We had to come to downtown Tatamagouche, NS to see a bear.
It was about 140km to the next Provincial Park campground at Caribou/Munroe's Island Provincial Park. Being a summer friday, our experience was that it was a bit iffy that there would be space.
As we feared, the main campground was fully booked, but they did have an overflow area. We were not hopeful. But, we were surprised--the overflow area overlooked the day use park right on the water. It is an open field with a few trees and only eight sites. We took a site for two nights.
After looking at the rest of the campground later in the day, it turned out that we have the best spot in the park. Even the oceanfront sites are more crowded than this area and, except for a few in the front row, most don't have a view. We only lack a fire pit and a barbecue grill. No loss for us.
Being a bit weary, we put out the chairs, sat around and walked the beach. I also found that the park has limited wireless access and got this journal started, but only a single entry so far.
The motorcycles are still in the trailer, but the doors are open.
