Rain

Not much more to say. Spent most of the day driving in the rain to Santee State Park in South Carolina. Shorter drive than yesterday…only eight hours.

I’m not sure we will do the US 301 cutoff again. Until you get well into Virginia the road has become a forest of traffic lights as the growth over the past few years has generated many housing developments in between many shopping centers. It may actually be less stressful to just stay on I95 through Baltimore and Washington. The rain didn’t help.

The only positive development is that Wawa opened many locations in Maryland and Virginia. It is one of our favorite stops for coffee. Better and cheaper than Starbucks. Good made to order sandwiches and other treats…and their fuel prices are pretty good as well. We stopped twice at Wawa and once at a Buc-ees in SC for cheap diesel.

Drove pretty hard to get to Santee and made it just after 5pm. As we were pulling up to the office (which looked closed at 5:04), a car going the other way stopped. It was the park attendant. She asked of we were looking for a site and told us 22 was the only one available and just for one night. We have to stop in tomorrow morning to pay up. After dinner I looked up the rates and SC parks seem to use variable pricing and Saturday is the costliest and they vary from week to week, it could be $38 or $48. We won’t know until tomorrow.

We have settled in for the night, with the water tanks now filled and the AC on. It is in the mid-70s and quite humid…and the rain just started again. Ellen made a tasty pasta carbonara for dinner with salad. Best meal in a couple of days.

We are off to General Coffee State Park in Georgia tomorrow where we will catch up with Harry and Sally.
