On To Lake Seminole

Slept late this morning, but that was mostly a function of the clock. With Daylight Saving Time (an absolute misnomer), sunrise is now after 7am…at least until we get to Gulf Islands later in the week which is in the Central Time Zone.

It was a quiet morning at General Coffee SP. After coffee, Ellen and Sally went off for a short birdwalk and I did my shoulder PT. It is not easy to do in the van, but I can get through most of them inside. The shoulder has been a little sore, probably from the long driving days…but rest is here. We will be staying still for four nights starting today.

The birding at General Coffee was evidently unrewarding to Ellen and Sally, so did not tarry and headed towards East Bank campground on Lake Seminole, yet another long drive. With a stop for groceries (the Publix in Douglas, GA is commendable), a stop for fuel and and a stop for lunch, we arrived at the Corps of Engineers park at around 3pm. It is actually a day earlier than our original plan, so we have a site for one night and then we move to another one for the next three nights. 

Our site is practically on the water and has a great view…and great birds. Once we got set up in the site, we were able sit and look out over the lake. It was then that we started seeing birds in the lakeside trees in front of us. When we spotted a flight of 30 White Pelicans flying over, it was time to start counting. Without moving from out chairs we had 14 species in about half an hour includung the pelicans, both types of vultures, Osprey, Blurbird, Red-winged Blackbirds, Mourning Doves, several sparrows, a mockingbird and the highlight, Common Gallinule. 

There is a little drainage canal next to our site leading to a reed-rimmed pool at the lakeshore. We first heard it, but the gallinule eventually swam into view. We actually saw two more after dinner.

Dinner was at our site tonight. Harry and Sally have a one night lakeside site on the other side of the campground, but we be near neighbors by tommorow. Another outdoor dinner. Pork burgers with blue cheese and an avocado and greens salad for us and salmo burger and bean salad for H & S. Ellen’s Almond butter oat bars for dessert.

There was a colorful sunset after dinner and it should be a nice quiet night.
