Now Where Did That Hour Go

After yesterday’s drive we faded fast last night. Santee State Park was quite quiet and comfortable once it cooled down a bit, so we had a good night’s sleep, arising later than usual… but only because the clocks sprung forward overnight…at least those with GPS connections.

After morning coffee and welcome hot showers, we did a short bit of birding on the way to the camp office. The highlight was a pair of Brown Trashers cavorting on the grass right in front of us.  The Bluebirds, Pine Wabler and several Ruby-crowned Kinglets were also pretty good finds for a five minute walk to the office. After all that rain yesterday, today was warm and sunny…a fine day.

Once there we settled up for our campsite—at the shocking rate of $51 for the night. It seems that South Carolina State Parks have adopted a variable pricing model where the price of a campsite depends on the month and day of the week. A site which might be $28 on Tuesday night, becomes $48 (plus taxes) on a Friday or Saturday night. We are getting into private campground rates here.

It was nearly 10am by the time we left for General Coffee State Park in Georgia (where they do not have variable pricing). With quite nice weather and a couple pf stops for fuel and lunch, we made it to General Coffe by 3pm. We were able to get the site directly across from our friends, Harry and Sally…for a mere $31. It was actually the site I had cancelled when we thought we would not be able to make it here after the radiator incident.

We spent the rest of the day catching up, finishing up with our first outdoor dinner of the trip. Ellen made a delcious stuffed sweet potato and salad dinner.

Tomorrow we are off on another four hour journey to Eastbank campground on Lake Seminole, right on the Georgia/Florida border. We will finally be able to start relaxing for the next four nights. It is a Corps of Engineers campground thatwe have stayed at several times in the past.
