Day 1 - A Complete Stop

We got away about an hour later than our usual start, leaving at about 9:30am. It was also an unusual Saturday start; we usually leave on a Sunday to minimize the traffic, but had heard the Saturday was just as good...not this Saturday.

We had quite a bit to finish loading into Speedy since yesterday was such poor weather. But we were finally on our way.

The traffic wasn’t bad through Massachusetts, but increased steadily through the Tri-state area. At least there was no precipitation, just gray skies. We were hoping to get as far as Maryland, our first night stop on the last drive west, but it was not to be. Beside the late start, we came to a complete stop on I-78 in Pennsylvania not far from the New Jersey border. It was just at sunset and we waited about a half hour before the traffic moved at all. The variously map apps indicated a crash about a mile ahead. It was stangce to look in the rear view mirror and watch the traffic pile up behind us as a double line of headlights grew quickly and stretched out of sight.

When we finally moved and passed the now empty crash site, traffic sped up but was now very heavy and in the dark...at least no rain or snow. 

We are still in snow country. There has been a significant amount on ground since we got out of Cohasset. We made it as far as the outskirts of Harrisburg, PA and are parked behind the local Cracker Barrel for the night, backed up to a snowbank.

We hope to get as far as Tennessee tomorrow, but are unlikely to get much beyond Knoxville. I hope that it is below the snow line.
