As we arrived the pool was full of Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese, just like yesterday. The cranes were taking off in the same sort of small groups as before, the geese weren’t going anywhere. In fact, large groups of geese were flying in, replacing the cranes. I guess this wetland was today’s feeding pool. We didn’t get the pictures.
Today was much clearer than yesterday and the sunrise wasn’t as spectacular, but there was better light on the mountains and the Snow Geese were brilliantly white in the light.
Today we moved on into Arizona. It would have been a stretch to stop in Tucson and also make it to the refuge today, so we decided to stop in Benson, about an hour outside of Tucson, and then go into Tucson in the morning to shop before going on to the refuge.
We actually made three stops today, first in Hatch, NM in an attempt to find some fresh roasted Hatch Chiles, but it was too late in the season. The second stop was in Willcox, AZ for lunch at Adolfo’s Taco Shop, a good Mexican take-out place we had been to on an earlier trip. The burritos were pretty good, but their guacamole wasn’t up to snuff.
Our final stop was at the Butterfield RV Resort and Observatory, where we are spending the night in a somewhat fancy RV park. Unfortunately, the on-site observatory is fully booked for tonight, so no stargazing. The view would probably be limited anyway, as it was a full moon just last night.
As I write this, the trains are going through town. As we traveled west, the highways frequently paralleled the main freight line tracks. Much of the freight traffic is carried on long trains of multi-modal cars with either cargo containers or trailers. A notable new carrier seen on the trains and on the road are bright blue Amazon trailers. This is the first time I’ve noticed them and we have seen a lot of these shiny new-looking trailers, mostly heading East...just an observation.
On to Buenos Aires tomorrow.
