Day 2 - Mars Hill to Godbout

After a quiet, but damp, night at the Big Rock ski area parking lot we were on our way to Canada, crossing the border at Van Buren, ME into St. Leonard, NB after topping up Speedy in the US. It was an uneventful crossing and we were on our way to the Saint Lawrence over much of the same route we took last summer.

We made a short stop at the Atlantic Superstore in Edmundston, NB to pick up fresh food that we thought might be problematic when entering Canada. It turned out that this was a bit unfounded as the Canadian Border officer only wanted to know that all of our food was packaged and didn't come directly from a farm.

It was our first look the emphasis that Canadian stores are emphasizing Canadian products over foreign sourced (US) ones. Here is the cheese case in the store (note all the items marked with Maple leaf):

After that we continued on to Matane. We had expected that we would spend the night there, but arrived in time to catch the ferry to Baie-Comeau. The next one wasn't until tomorrow afternoon so we hopped at the chance to travel today. We wanted to get on without a reservation and the guys measuring the van said there was no guarantee, but to have hope. We did and it worked.

We wanted to stop somewhere for a couple of days to both decompress from our two long travel days and to wait out the unsettled weather forecast. On the way across we started looking at campgrounds near Baie-Comeau. Nothing looked promising as somewhere to stay for a couple of days and we ended up going about a half hour east to Godbout. It has a nice quiet small municipal campground right on the water that we stayed at last year. Even if the weather is bad we can get some good rest, have hot showers, do some shoreline birding and possibly eat out.

I'm trying out the new Starlink Mini while here. It is just propped up on the dash facing out the front window (and not pointed north) and it seems to work fine for most things. I haven't tried anything that is response time sensitive, like interactive video calling.

More later.
