This time we will be going up to Matane on the St. Lawrence, then crossing over to Baie-Comeau and on up through Quebec on Route 389 to the Trans-Labrador Highway. Once in Labrador we will go east across the Province and south to Banc-Sablon and the ferry to Newfoundland…about 1800 miles from Cohasset to Blanc-Sablon.
We got off to a wet start; much wetter than we expected. It looked like just drizzle and then cloudy, but it rained heavily all through Maine right up until we stopped in Mars Hill, about 30 miles north of Houlton.
Unfortunately, it looks like rainy days along our route for the next week or so. We have no idea what it will do on the 100 kilometers or so of gravel road through Quebec. Hilly and twisty gravel was going to be interesting enough; muddy will just make it more so.
The most interesting part of today was being stopped by the Maine Ste Police for driving a dark van. We were driving along from Houlton to Mars Hill when a police car came screaming along the other way. As soon as it passed us it made a U-turn and puled us over. We had no idea why; we were well under the speed limit.
The first thing he asked was whether I picked up anyone walking along the road. We hadn’t and hadn’t seen anyone walking. He asked several variations of the same question before informing us that they were looking for a dark van that had supposedly picked up a woman walking along and it was a domestic situation. After assuring him again that it wasn’t us, he wished us well and we went on our way.
Tomorrow we should cross the border near here and hopefully make it to Matane…with a stop on the way for groceries in Canada. We have no idea what the situation is with import restrictions on fresh food, so figured we would just wait until we got to Canada.
Onward to another drive in rain.
