Another adventure starts tomorrow. Ellen and I are off to New Zealand to visit old friends and do some of the birding that we didn't do when we lived there.
We hope all will be okay when we arrive as Auckland is in the middle of its third cyclone in a month, this one is just about a direct hit. Gusts of 120kph (75mph) are expected today.
We lived there for three years and summers were quite dry throughout our time living there. We are hoping all of our friends will be un affected by the current storm.
Out travel is rather different from past trips as we fly from Dallas to Auckland rather than from the West Coast. Since we found a very good fare, I suspect that it is a new route for American Airlines. It is a 15 hour flight though.
Our plan is to spend a week on Waiheke Island, where we lived, visiting friends there and in Auckland. We will then fly to the Invercargill at the bottom of the South Island and spend an overnight on Stewart Island, even further south. It is not as long as we would have liked, but accommodations were scarce. We will then rent a car in Invercargill and drive back to Auckland over about 20 days...about 1,600 miles.
Aside from some birding sites, we have no planned itinerary or reservations, just a possible driving route.
We'll see how that works out!
