Electric vehicles, especially small ones seem to be quite popular on Waiheke. It is actually and ideal place for them. The Island is not very big and the roads are quite narrow. Many businesses have chargers. The Countdown market has six in there underground car park.
The Nissan Leaf seems to be the most popular with over 400 of about 600 EVs registered on the island. Its 100 mile range is no big deal when it is less than 25 road miles from end-to-end. 600 EVs is almost 10% of all vehicles registered here.
In addition to the Leaf, there are quite a few vehicles that not available in the US, including many made in China. Here is a sample seen at the Countdown Parking Garage.
