Return To Riley Creek
Today was our day to leave Teklanika and reurn to the Riley Creek campground for a couple of more nights. We got a fairly early start but proceeded slowly along the park road. There were supposed to be Northern Hawk Owls somewhere along the road. Ellen looked and looked, but was unable to locate them.
Before we reached the Savage River checkpoint we passed one of the tan tour buses which was stopped. It was being driven by the young driver we'd met on our early morning ride out to the Eilson Visitor Center. He had shown us photos of the hawk owls then.We stopped and asked if we were in the right spot, but we found out we missed it. They were about six miles back. As we were not allowed to turn around on the restricted part of the road, it looks like our finding of hawk owls in Denali is not to be.
After clearing the checkpoint, we were back on pavement. We stopped at the sled dog kennels on our way back. it was time to give the dogs a few pats and collect the sled dog kennels passport stamp. We got there before the first tour group and had the place to ourselves for awhile and left as a group arrived.
After that it was a stop at the Murie Science Center for Internet access to check a week's worth of email and upload a bunch of pending Speedy Journal entries. By the time we got to the Riley Creek campground it was nearly lunchtime. We found a site very near our original site a week ago and had lunch.
After lunch it was back to the Riley Creek Merchantile to dump our tanks and fill up with fresh water. It was also time for well-needed showers. After sven nights at Teklanika with limited water a long hot shower was much appreciated.
It was then back to camp to rest, relax and catch up on world events...not necessarily a good thing.
