Warm—For A Short While

Another Cracker Barrel breakfast, this time at Santee, SC, then we were on our way south again. It was beginning to warm up and was in the 70's by lunch time. We didn't realize that it wasn't going to last.

We were heading to the Corps of Engineers campground at Lake Seminole, on the Florida/Georgia line. The route we took went south on I-90 into Georgia, then it angled southwest across the state, via Waycross and Valdosta before dropping into Florida above Monticello and then onto I-10 east of Talahassee. We chose Lake Seminole because the campround has water, electricty and, most importantly, hot showers. It is only about 10 miles from I-10.

It was a pleasant ride along some smaller roads and through some small towns and cities, a lot more pleasant than I-95 and the constant heavy truck traffic. Two-lane blacktop and the countryside was an appreciated change.

That it was about 50 miles shorter was also apppreciated. At Speedy's highway speeds it was also faster, as the speed limit through the back roads was usually 55 and that's about all we do on the Interstates when we are pulling the trailer.

We arrived at Lake Seminole late in the afternoon—in daylight for a change, but as I was registering it started to rain. There was also a sign at the registration kiosk warning of freezing conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

After settling onto our site and finally putting some water in the tank (not sure this was a wise idea—but we are in Florida!), I brought up the weather on the iPad. It didn't look good. The forecast cold extended all the way along our route, well into Texas. We discussed the possibililty of just staying here for a couple of days until the cold weather passed through since we didn't have to be at Aransas until the end of the week, but it is still over 850 miles away, at least two long days of driving.

At the moment, we are planning to carry on westward tomorrow, going as far as we can. It is expected to be rainy but not freezing during the day. We'll see how far we get. There are plenty of Walmarts and Cracker Barrels along the route and even a few state and county parks near the highway.

After that discussion it was off to those hot showers and then our first dinner in Speedy, tortolini with pesto and raisin walnut oat bars for dessert.

No real bird-of-the-day, but we saw our first flocks of snowy egrets and had to slow down to allow a pair of black vultures to get off the road before we passed them.
