We woke up this morning in chilly Stevensville, MD. It was in the low twenties, but there was no snow fallling and no rain and dry roads. After breakfast at the Cracker Barrel where we spent the night, we continued south on US 301 and VA 207 to I-95 near Ruther Glen, VA. It was time for today's first fuel stop. Gas at the Flying-J was $2.999/gal. I haven't seen it that low for quite a while and when you are putting in nearly 30 gallons, it makes a difference.
From there it was south on I-95 all the way to Santee, SC. There was snow on the ground until we got about 50 miles into North Carolina. The temperatures rose as we went south, all the way to the mid-50's.
We stopped only for gas and at the famous (for its signs, anyway) South of the Border at the South Carolina state line. We don't usually stop here, but they have a sef-service car wash with a tall bay. The amount of salt encrusted on Speedy and the trailer was quite incredible. All of the windows, save the windshield, went completely cloudy, there seemed to be about a quarter inch crust on Speedy and our blacl cargo trailer was nearly white (gray, at least) The front of the van had the added touch of black dirt mixed with the salt. By the time we finished up there was a line of salt-encrusted cars, including another Roadtrek, waiting for the bay.
Speedy is clean now.
We've stopped at another Cracker Barrel for the night and expect to be in Florida tomorrow, hopefully at the Corps of Engineers campground at Lake Seminole—where they have showers, so we can be as clean as Speedy. It should be even warmer.
Today's bird is an Eastern Towhee (Ellen's first for 2014) at the Maryland Welcome Center before the Virginia state line.
