Need I say more?
It was a hot and sticky night. We awoke to the sound of the mozzies hurling themselves against the back door screen sounding like a swarm of angry bees. As we got up and made coffee, I took out our ThermaCell, lit it and propped it on a book right next to the screen. Five minutes later, all was quiet. When it comes to mosquitoes, I'm all for chemistry.
One of our discussions yesterday was about bug jackets. It has become so bad that the rangers were wearing them as they walked around the campground. We'd queried them about their jackets as I'd recognized the construction of the jacket, an outer no-seeum mesh over an inner open mesh that kept the outer one away from the skin (and away from the mosquito proboscis coming through the mesh). They were a brand called Bug Tamer Plus and the maintenance guys at Aransas had them when we were there. I'd gone online to see if there were any dealers around and the manufacturer's site listed one in nearby Homestead.
We were all getting a little desperate and covered in bug bites. So after breakfast and birding, we all piled into Harry and Sally's Roadtrek for an impromptu trip to Homestead to find the "A OK Fish n' Bait", the purported dealer of the Bug Tamer Plus. After a search, it became the mythical "A OK Fish n' Bait" since the address given on the manufacturer's site was now a pawn shop.
There were three other dealers listed but they were all in Miami. So much for finding a Bug Tamer jacket. They seem like an excellent product and, even if we don't come back here, we expect that they might be quite useful when we go to Alaska next summer, so we may order them when we get home.
With our bug jacket search thwarted, we made the most of our trip into Homestead with a stop a Publix for food and lunch at the Taqueria Morelia. Even Harry liked the offerings there ... could be the best Mexican food east of Texas.
After a stop at Robert Is Here (vegetables and Key Lime shakes) and the main visitor center, it was back into mozzieland.
There is a forecast for rising winds and a cold front moving through. Here's hoping there may be some respite tomorrow.
