We left our overflow campsite at Koreshan State Park fairly early this morning and started up I-75. Aside for stooping for fuel, we continued on to Tarpon Springs to see my mother. She is staying with my brother Jeff until April, escaping the winter in Braintree.
We took her out to lunch and caught up on all the doings of my siblings, nieces and nephews. Jeff and hid wife, Linda, were out at work so we didn't get a chance to see them.
The destination for today was the Silver Lake Campground in the Croom Tract of the Withacoochee State Forest. This is our first time staying in a Florida State Forest campground. We got off the highway and went several miles along back roads to the entrance to the forest and the campground roads. There are three campgrounds here, Silver Lake, Cypress Glen and Crooked River. The first two have electricity, water, showers and a view of the lake, the last is tent only with no amenities. We chose the first.
After all of the driving on back roads, then on a dirt road into the campground, we found that we were actually right next to I-75. We can hear the traffic in the back ground. It is a nice campground otherwise and a pleasant place to stay the night.
We will be moving on tomorrow with a reservation at the Ochlockonee River State Park (don't you just love Florida park names?). It is near the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge where we will be stopping on the way. It is a prime birding hotspot and the home of the introduced population of Whooping Cranes that migrate between Wisconsin and Florida. These are the one that are raised in Wisconsin and follow an ultralight aircraft to their wintering grounds. I don't know if we will see any as the refuge is quite large and we'll probably only stay a day.
Friday night's stopover is still up in the air, but we will be at Fort Pickens on Saturday to start our last two weeks before going back to mountains of snow.
