Our last night at Pawtuckaway State Park was a little damp with some rain overnight, but it had stopped by morning. We left fairly early to go back to Max BMW to pick up the motorcycles, arriving there at about 8:30. They were still opening up, so we spent some time hooking up the trailer and moving it to where we could load the bikes.
When we went inside, they were just finishing up my bike. We weren't particularly bothered by that as they had squeezed us in while fully booked for service. We spent the time browsing in the showroom looking at the new models. I was particularly impressed by the new F800GT, a touring version of my bike. It is much like the R1200RT, but smaller and lighter with single-sided swingarm and a belt drive. John Martin, whom I've known for quite awhile, tried his best to sell me one. Maybe another year. It is quite a good looking motorcycle.
Finally, our bikes were ready. We loaded them into the trailer and were on our way to Giffford State Park in Vermont, about 170 miles away. It was all highway until we got into Vermont and then the two-lane US 4 all the way to Killington. We stopped for lunch at the Trapdoor Bakery in Quechee. It was a nice enough place, but the food was only so-so. We probably should have held out until we got to Woodstock.
Gifford Woods State Park is just north of Killington on VT 100. As much as we were surprised and impressed with Pawtuckaway, we were a bit disappointed in Gifford Woods. It is a small park and the sites are quite tight. Our site is right near the entrance and definitely within hearing distance of VT 100, a failrly busy road. The site is pretty level, but in the shade and quite sandy. It was recently graded, so the surface is loosely packed and very easily tracked into Speedy. As we booked so late, not much was available and this was about the only one large enough to fit Speedy and the trailer.
The Appalachian Trail runs through the park (one of the reasons for choosing it) and we hope to hike part of it before the weekend is out. Tomorrow, we hope to visit the Marsh-Billings-Rockerfeller NPS site and neighboring Billings farm. By motorcycle, if we can, but rain is predicted, so it could be in Speedy. The weekend is predicted to be clear, so at least one good loop ride is in the future.
