An early start, Santee Coastal Reserve, still no Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers.
(Note: This post and all that follow are quite short as I'm posting them well after the trip and memory is now a bit foggy. I'm just attempting to remember the highlights)
Today we started out at dawn and took Speedy north to the Santee Coastal Reserve, a wildlife management area further north along the Santee River. There were supposed to be Red-cockaded Woodpeckers there. We, once again, found the trees, but no birds.
The reserve is quite large, with several trails and environments, from swamp to open forest to large impoundment ponds along the river. There were lots of ducks and shorebirds in and along the the impoundments and there were lots of mozzies in the woods.
