After nearly 10 hours of traveling and 432 miles, we find ourselves in the Flying-J parking lot in beautiful Lamar, PA. Not much to choose from out here on I-80W. We could have opted for a pricier private campground, but we're just passing through.
We got a fairly late start, leaving home a little before 10 AM after spending a couple of hours loading the final things onto Speedy (mostly the mountain bikes, perishable food and electronics) and shutting up the house. The drive was fairly uneventful, with only moderate traffic. A couple of heavy thunderstorms along the way happened during Ellen's driving stints, of course. The refrigerator is still the bane of our westward driving. The gas blows out at highway speeds and the DC power doesn't keep it cool with the sun on the driver's (south) side.
We stopped at about 7:30 PM at the Lamar Flying-J. It is actually one of the quieter Flying-Js that we have overnighted at, fairly far from the highway, a flat lot, and the truck parking is far enough away that the ground doesn't shake. A nutritious dinner from the attached Denny's was in order. (Are you kidding ... it's a Denny's!) This is a restaurant that serves the Meat & Potatoes burger—prime rib chunks and french fries topped with two kinds of melted cheese, brown gravy and mayo, all on a cheddar burger bun with a side of mashed potatoes and brown gravy.
After waiting about 20 minutes to be seated in the half-empty restaurant, we ordered what was probably one of the few non-brown offering, the avocado chicken salad. But they couldn't resist—it came with bacon. It was actually pretty tasty. Since we didn't want to be seen as too good, we topped our dinner off with a couple of Klondike Bars from the Flying-J store.
Time to write this entry, try to find the Olympics on the TV and get ready for an early start tomorrow.
