A Day at the Outpost

It was Sunday and we slept in a bit (maybe 6:30 or so). It was still cold in the morning, near freezing. We seem to consistently be a few degrees colder than forecast for the local weather station, which is about 10 miles north of the Sonoran Outpost.

It will be a short entry as it was a pretty boring day—laundry, community building and Speedy cleaning, phone calls, catching up on email, etc. I made a short trip up to the visitor center to get a copy of the larger refuge map, which has refuge road numbers and campsites on it.

We had dinner in the community center with some of the other volunteers, we each brought our own meals and just chatted a bit. Reminded us of our weekly dinners with our good friends but not quite as much fun.

We are sharing our RV site with a couple of other residents. I was sitting at the picnic table working at my Macbook, when I heard a woodpecker just before sunset. There is an old Agave flower stalk (about 20 feet high) wired to on of the shade columns of the RV site. A Ladder-backed Woodpecker seems to live in it. It perched on a hole in it about four feet from the ground and squawked and looked around for about five minutes before going in for the night. A few minutes later there was a wren buzzing away practically next to me. It was clinging to the electrical box that supplies the site. It did this for a couple of minutes and then, assumed I wasn't  threat, few up into a perch in the box with the end of its tail sticking out.. a safe and probably warm place for the night.
