So much for our cooling problems. It is now Tuesday, the last day we will be spending with Ellen's brother Bob and his girlfriend, Beth. They are heading back tomorrow, while we move over to the Elkmont campground for a couple of days before heading home.
We rode up to Clingman's Dome with them. It is the highest point in the park and the road goes to within about 300 feet of the top. There is only a half mile walk up to a big observation tower with 360 degree views...when there are no clouds. They ride up was fun as both the main road up towards Newfound Gap and and the Clingmans Dome road are well paved and twisty.
It was pretty cloudy when we got up there and walked to the tower. The views were mostly obscured by clouds but we could see to the West and to the North as far as Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. After strolling back down the trail and stopping in the gift shop, we suited up to ride back down the mountains to the campground. We'd just gotten back into our riding gear and started the bikes when the skies opened up. It was back off the bikes and, with a frenzy, put on rain gear before starting down in the pouring rain. It was a slow ride down, but the rain petered out about three-quarters of he way back to the main road and it rained on and off all the back to camp. Our gear was thoroughly soaked and we hung them dripping inside the trailers while we made lunch. It continued to sprinkle through the afternoon, but has ended. We may get more of the same tomorrow.
Hopefully, our Alcove shelter will dry overnight and we can finish packing up in the morning.
